WHAT IS THE FTVA?
The bill includes provisions to:
Protect and expand the right to vote including:
Enacting automatic voter registration and online voter registration,
Making Election Day a public holiday,
Ensuring voters have access to at least 15 consecutive days of early voting, ensuring every state offers same day registration,
Creating federal minimum standards on vote by mail and drop boxes,
Creating more mechanisms to hold states accountable for voter suppression policies,
and restoring the right to vote for returning citizens;
Reduce the influence of money in politics;
Eliminate partisan and racial gerrymandering.
The Freedom to Vote Act (FTVA) is a transformative legislative package that will meaningfully expand voting access, particularly for communities who have been historically disenfranchised by our voting systems.
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Since 2020, 49 states have introduced voter suppression legislation. This landmark federal legislation would create a national framework from which states can draw to improve their own voting processes and election administration.
Importantly, this proposal reflects feedback from state and local election officials to ensure that the people responsible for implementing these reforms are able to do so effectively.
The Voting Rights Act is nearing its 60th anniversary, and while key parts of it were reaffirmed by the Supreme Court in 2023, voters deserve federal legislation that protects their access to the ballot box. The bill improves access to the ballot for Americans, advances commonsense election integrity reforms and protects our democracy from emerging threats. The Freedom to Vote Act also elevates the voices of American voters by ending partisan gerrymandering and rooting out the undue influence of special interest money in our politics.
Policies such as the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act are incredibly popular with the American public, with up to 70 percent of the American public supporting this type of legislation. Americans want our elections to be safe, accessible, and fair, so use language that speaks to these values. The FTVA will protect our freedom to vote, ensure every voter’s voice can be heard, and make sure our democracy works for all of us.
